Odam - Handloom Museum, Payyambalam, Kannur
Located in the heart of the Kannur city, the Odam-Handloom Museum is an institution that showcases the historic handloom tradition of the Northern Kerala. The displays in the 10 museum galleries tell the story of Malabar's handloom trends and its evolution. The museum is housed in a heritage building built in the Indo-European Architectural style during the Malabar British rule.
The gallery presents the descriptions given by tourists about the handloom trade and textiles of the Malabar coast. Here visitors get to experience how cloth weaving evolved from the early crafts. The invention of the loom, which greatly helped in the modernization of handloom, the peculiarities of Indian garment manufacturing, the influence of the Kerala revival movements and national freedom struggle institutions on the handloom industry, are all revealed in various galleries. A three- dimensional view of the weaving streets is set here. Modern fabrics like Jacquard loom are also showcased.
